Ultimate Guide to Fire Safety

Fire accidents are unforeseen/unexpected misfortunes that happen almost on a daily basis. The nature of fire attack has made it dreadful and as a result, combined forces and materials have been put in place to combat any menace that can arise by this agent. Furthermore, it is even more important to guide against fire attack on children. Some basic steps are outlined below.

Fire Safety

  • Keep children and pets away from heaters.
  • Prevent children from playing with match and candle sticks.
  • Teach children emergency exit points of the homes and offices where they work.
  • Cook with absolute attention. Wastes such as papers and other combustible materials should be cleared away so that children will not throw them into the fire. It is also necessary to place gas cookers on stands so that children will not be able to reach them.
  • Naked wires and faulty electrical appliances should be promptly repaired.
  • Children should be taught how to cool burns. Burns are best cooled by immersing in cold water for about 13 minutes.
  • Electrical wires should not be passed under floor coverings such as mats, carpets and rugs.

Earthquake safety

  • Shelves, book cases, cribs and other interiors that can topple and fall should not be kept near the windows.
  • Adequate nutrition must be given to children for at least, 3 days after an earthquake occurs.
  • Clothing such as blankets and equipments such as cribs with wheels and store strollers should be always available to relocate children and infants during/before an earthquake.
  • Babies can be protected in cribs that have bumper pads created in them.
  • Teaching children how to expect an earthquake, the causes of earthquakes and how to quickly get out of the place of occurrence.
  • After an earthquake, there is a possibility of fire outbreak especially when inflammable gases escape from loosed valves. Children should be taught how to detect the smell of gas with properties such as color and smell.
